The mechanism of electrocatalytic hydrogenation of benzene was investigated by electrochemical techniques——Rotating Electrode(RE),Cyclic Voltammetry(CV).Based on the experimental results and reasonable analysis, the following conclusions were drawn:benzene hydrogenation is a multi-step,irreversible and elelctrocatalytic process controlled mainly by diffusion on Pt and Hg electrodes. For electrochemical coupling of benzene hydrogenation and water electrolysis, the composite SPE electrode with optimum catalyst was applied. It was found that the process of benzene hydrogenation on SPE electrode was controlled by diffusion that was consistent with the behaviors of benzene on Pt and Hg electrodes, nevertheless the electrochemical hydrogenation voltage on electrode was different.
