The anxiety state of 55 general surgical patients were investigated by StateTrait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and 10-item examination of somatic anxiety before and after operation. The results showed that the State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) scores had increased significantly pre-operation. Somatic anxiety scores had no obvious difference among those before and after operation. In the higher Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI) scorpes group,SAI scores of Past -operation, but not Pre-operation,were significantly higher than those in the lower TAI scores group. The SAI scores of the emergency operation before and after operation were significantly higher than the date-selected operation. The female’s SAI and somatic anxiety scores of pre-operation were significantly higher than the male’s. Anxiety state induced by the operation of generat surgical patients were not obviously affected by age, nature and culture.
