This paper explores humanistic elements in The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. In his life he spares no efforts to tap his own potentiality to achieve self- improvement, receives the influence, assistance from others to make up for his own weaknesses and finally becomes the first self-made man in America. Franklin's belief of the 13 virtues is a clear evidence of his morality-based values, and his active participation in public service reveals his altruistic inclination. His scientific research is all based on logical and rational principles, which brings about abundant achievements and wins him international recognition. In this book the humanist outlook is significant and helpful to individual's self-identity and self-cultivation; the altruistic spirit has a great influence on keeping social harmony and promoting international cooperation. It can be concluded that Franklin is a loyal humanist, who firmly puts his humanist philosophy into practice, perfects his own secular life and wins public admiration.
This paper mainly analyzes the spiritual salvation of the protagonist Adela in the novel. In the early 20 thcentury, India is under the British colonial rule and Indians suffer a lot from it. India lacks autonomy and there is a wide racial gap between the British and Indians. In this context, Adela has deeply-rooted prejudice against Indians at first, whose discrimination makes her falsely accuse Aziz of attempting to rape her. However, merging into the Indian society gives Adela a chance to see the goodness of Indians, and finally her racial prejudice is eliminated.
This paper studies post-war America around the 1950's when On the Road was written and analyzes the protagonist Dean Moriarty as a spokesman of the Beat Generation.He is a typical beat who revolts against the traditional social values and chases after the spiritual complacency.In addition,he opposes wars and advocates the equality between men and women.Thus in a sense Dean is a rebellious hero and stands ahead of his age.
With the world globalization, China's communication with other countries has become more frequent. It is in great demand that a large number of college graduates who not only master their major but also do well in communication in English with English speakers. However, such graduates are scare because the backward teaching method-the Grammar-Traditional Method, cannot meet what the contemporary Chinese society demands. The reforms of the college English teaching are urgent and necessary. This paper first explores the major problems existing in the college English teaching. Furthermore, it introduces the basic theory of the Communicative Approach and analyzes its advantages in college English teaching.
