Chinglish is what occurs when the Chinese language and English language crash into one another.When native Chinese speakers who are learning English attempt to directly translate Chinese into English,using Chinese sentence structure,wording and grammar,a blend of Chinese and English happens.Among Chinese English teachers and English as a second language (ESL) foreign experts working with students,this phenomenon is commonly referred to as Chinglish.In order to help students to overcome Chinglish in their oral English and cultivate their sensibility of foreign culture and mode of thinking the awareness of the causes of Chinglish is a must.This paper focuses on analyzing the causes in terms of negative transfer of mother tongue and the differences between modes of thinking and cultural backgrounds.
Shen Congwen and Thomas Hardy are both known for their regional novels,Hardy for his "Wessex" novels,and Shen Congwen for his "World of Xiangxi" .Both writers display a sense of transcendence and wandering in their female characters.Both Xiao Xiao in Shen Congwen' s Xiao Xiao and Eustacia in Hardy' s The Return of the Native transcend the traditions and customs of their times,and experience a consequent wandering.But the ways of the two writers in presenting their heroines is quite different.While Xiao Xiao was mentally active but did nothing except follow the traditional system,Eustacia' s thought was followed by her own words and actions.
In the 15th century,Johannes Gutenberg introduced mechanical movable type printing to Europe,causing an explo sion of knowledge that changed the world.This new way of printing enabled the masses to be exposed to works of literature that would have been inaccessible to them previously.The rapid development of technology in the 21st century presents educators with similar opportunities to expose an ever-widening circle of students to previously inaccessible works of literature.Although controversial with some,the use of films in the ESL literature classroom is one such opportunity.This paper aims to show that the use of films in the ESL literature classroom is a good idea because it is inexpensive,effective in developing listening,speaking,reading and writing skills,exposes students to authentic cultural information,helps students to absorb English,and develops the habit of reading for pleasure.Finally,some tips on the effective use of film in the ESL literature classroom are given.
