The 576 patients with NIDDM were divided into different types according to the theory of syndrome differentiation of traditional chinese medicine and treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. Statisfactory results were obtained. The effective rate after one course of treatment (one month) was 81.25%, that after two courses was 87.67%, and that after three courses was 92.54%. The study showed that acupuncture and moxibustion are more effective on NIDDM in patients undergoing a long therapeutic course, in males than in females, in young patients than in older ones, in patients with a short course of disease than with a long course of disease, in patients with serious obesity than with slight obesity, in patients of excess type than those of excess type accompanied with deficiency tyep and deficeency type, in patients without complication than with complications and with with serious complications and in patients without family history of NIDDM than with a fimily history of NIDDM. This study proved that the treatment of NIDDM with acupuncture and moxibustion is safe, effective and has no side effect. Therefore, it is worth recommending.
