Reconfigurable single-shot incoherent optical signal processing system for chirped microwave signal compression被引量:3

We propose and demonstrate a reconfigurable and single-shot incoherent optical signal processing system for chirped microwave signal compression, using a programmable optical filter and a multiwavelength laser(MWL). The system is implemented by temporally modulating a specially shaped MWL followed by a suitable linear dispersive medium. A microwave dispersion value up to 1.33 ns/GHz over several GHz bandwidth is achieved based on this approach. Here we demonstrate a singleshot compression for different linearly chirped microwave signals over several GHz bandwidth. In addition, the robustness of the proposed system when input RF signals are largely distorted is also discussed.

Compact fiber-optic diode-laser sensor system for wide-dynamic-range relative humidity measurement

A compact fiber-optic diode-laser sensor system for measuring relative humidity is studied. In such a system, a distributed feedback laser lasing near 1877 nm is used as light source while a high-precision Pt resistance as temperature sensor, an accuracy of 0.1% relative-humidity can be achieved. The laser sensor system is able to lock to the absorption peak and calculate the density of water vapor without any additional reference measurements. Using programs built in to the microcontroller unit, the laser system can switch functions between direct measurement at high density and second-harmonic detection at low density. The system can switch between the two modes automatically and work in a wide dynamic range.

160 km all-optical OFDM transmission system with inline chromatic dispersion compensation

An experimental demonstration of an all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AOS-OFDM) transmission system with inline chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation is carried out to test the nonlinear influence. With five subcarriers non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulated, the total bit rate is 50 Gb/s without polarization multiplexing. The receiver end is highly simplified with direct de- tection using optical Fourier transform filter. After transmission in 160-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link with 130-ps/nm residual CD, an optimum input optical power for the system performance is achieved.

Power distribution analysis for multiple modulation formats in an all-optical sampling wavelength division multiplexing system被引量:2

An optimal power distribution analysis for an all-optical sampling orthagonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) scheme with multiple modulation formats including diferential phase shift keyed(DPSK), diferential quadrature phase shift keyed(DQPSK), and non-return-to-zero(NRZ) is proposed. The noise tolerances of different modulation formats are analyzed, and the optimal input power ratio between phase and intensity modulation formats for the best overall receiving performance is investigated under unchanged total input power. Moreover, this scheme can seamlessly coexist with the traditional WDM channel.

Recent progresses on optical arbitrary waveform generation被引量:2

This paper reviews recent progresses on optical arbitrary waveform generation (AWG) techniques, which could be used to break the speed and bandwidth bottle- necks of electronics technologies for waveform generation. The main enabling techniques for optically generating optical and microwave waveforms are introduced and reviewed in this paper, such as wavelength-to-time mapping techniques, space-to-time mapping techniques, temporal pulse shaping (TPS) system, optoelectronics oscillator (OEO), programmable optical filters, optical differentiator and integrator and versatile electro-optic modulation implementations. The main advantages and challenges of these optical AWG techniques are also discussed.

30-GHz millimeter-wave carrier generation with single sideband modulation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering被引量:1

A new technique to generate a millimeter(mm)-wave carrier of 32.57 GHz(f_(LO)=10.85 GHz) with single sideband modulation(SSB) for radio-over-fiber(RoF) systems is experimentally demonstrated by using stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS).The SSB is realized by directly amplifying the +3rd sideband of the modulated optical carrier in the process of SBS.The pump wave is provided through a double Brillouin scattering frequency shifting configuration.The use of the same laser source to generate the pump wave ensures the stability of the mm-wave generation system since the relative frequency shift between them can be eliminated.In addition, the mm-wave carrier obtains an RF power gain of 21 dB with the SBS amplification and a 3-dB bandwidth of 10kHz.
